There is no way to move images between folders, view which folders images are in, or even cut (as opposed to copy) an image.

Though My Photo Index is an excellent image viewer - on par with Picasa, which is amazing for even a team of programmers to do in their spare time, nevertheless one person - it's difficult to use as an image organizer without these features.

Hi,

Do you think that a simple right click->move image(s) could have any value?

I was intentionally trying to hide the underlying file system since I hope to add the ability to organize on-line collections as well(like flickr & facebook).

Do you think that a simple right click->move image(s) could have any value?

Perhaps, but here is where I am coming from:  I have a giant folder labeled "Unorganized" on my desktop where I save all my images, to later sort and categorize into folders.  In order to do this, I need to sort through literally thousands of thumbnails and select dozens or hundreds of images, all the time holding the control key.  If I misclick or accidentally let go on control, everything gets deselected and I have to start over.

I have several friends in similar situations, and none of them can find any programs which make this any easier than Windows Explorer.  My plan was to find an open-source photo organizer, and add a "simple selection" mode, where plainly clicking on a thumbnail adds it to/removes it from the existing selection.  Though My Photo Index is by far the best open-source photo organizer I've found, without the ability to view only files in a specific folder and move them to another folder, we can't use it.

(I was actually able to add this simple-select ability to another program, JPO, but unfortunately it's waaaay too buggy to actually be used).

Now that you know where I'm coming from, you can see why we'd want the ability to view folders.  However, I realize this would be a great undertaking, so even a "move to folder" would be appreciated.

Thanks for your consideration, and for all your hard work on this great (and free) app!

Hi,

I'll start by implementing the "move to" functionality I'll add it to the new beta version.

Are you satisfied with the current selection methods of My Photo Index (the selection pane) or would a "sticky" mode could be more productive: something like when clicking an image it is automatically added to the selected images pane?

Thank you for the great feedback,

Asaf.

Hi,

After trying beta 1.24.3541 -- just another similar idea:

"Move" is great for online HDD, thanks for the featue! I think it could be a good possibility to have some "virtual move" for offline files. Situation:

Imagine we have a collection of files on HDD. As the collection grows bigger, we need to move some files to DVD / other offline media and delete original files from HDD. "Move" doesn't work in such scenario (e.g., for multisession DVD disks) -- what we need is to tell the program "file location already has changed" and force it to display something like "please insert DVD <some DVD label>" when using "open containing folder" or "update thumbnail" command.

BTW, after using "move" in beta 1.24.3541 file location in "folders" view gets updated only after program restart. I think it should be changed right after successful moving of the file.
